How to Choose a Lotion Pump for Skincare, Soap and Personal Care Products

A lotion pump may work well with hand soap but perform poorly with a thick cream. This is why selecting a dispensing pump should begin with the formulation rather than the appearance of the package.

Consider Product Viscosity First

Viscosity is one of the most important factors in lotion pump selection.

Lightweight lotions, shampoos and liquid soaps are easier to dispense than very thick creams or high-viscosity formulations.

If the product is particularly thick, the internal pump construction needs to be suitable for that formulation.

Always test the real product rather than using water as the only reference.

Choose an Appropriate Output

The desired dosage depends on how the consumer uses the product.

A facial serum or concentrated treatment may require a smaller amount per press, while body lotion or shampoo often needs a larger dose.

Bottle capacity also matters. A very high-output pump on a small bottle can empty the package too quickly.

Confirm the Neck Finish

The lotion pump and bottle need to share the same compatible neck specification.

For projects involving a new bottle and pump together, it is generally easier to match the components at the beginning than to search for a pump after the bottle mold or bottle order has already been finalized.

Decide on the Locking System

Many dispensing pumps use a locking actuator for transport and storage.

The appropriate locking design can depend on shipping, e-commerce requirements and consumer use.

This detail may seem small during product development but becomes important when finished products are packed into cartons and transported over long distances.

Test Bottle and Pump as One Package

A packaging system should be evaluated as an assembly.

Check whether the dip tube reaches the appropriate position, whether the bottle remains stable while pumping and whether the pump dispenses consistently after repeated use.

For brands sourcing both bottles and dispensing pumps, treating the components as one packaging system can simplify development and reduce compatibility problems.
